New study to examine norovirus in fresh berries

Center for Food Safety Assistant Professor Malak Esseili has been named one of the 2022 RFP Grant Recipients by the Center for Produce Safety . Her study titled “Optimizing methods for the detection and quantification of infectious human norovirus from fresh berries using human intestinal enteroids ” was one of 14 new projects funded by CPS.
Fellow CFS Assistant Professor Issmat Kassem will serve as a coinvestigator on the project.
Two other CFS researchers, Henk den Bakker and Faith Critzer will serve as coinvestigators on another CPS grant titled “A metagenomic approach to food safety risk mitigation in pears ” which is headed by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University Associate Professor Laura Strawn.
Both projects will begin in January of 2023.
